Poison. Inexplicable, instant love. Crawling into the wrong bed. Lots and lots of fainting. If this all sounds melodramatic, that’s because it is. Welcome to the weirdly emotional world of Sturm und Drang (“storm and stress”), 18th century Germany’s gift to world theatre. StormStressLenz looks at four plays by J. M. R. Lenz, the movement’s strangest author, selects 30 insanely dramatic bits, freshly translates them, shuffles them grossly out of context, and rocks the heck out of them.
